Nomzamo Mbatha, Somizi and AKA up for Kids’ Choice Awards
We know celebrities love saying that they’re not doing their jobs for recognition. But if we’re being honest, a little validation from the right people always gives you the extra boost you need. Somizi Mhlongo, Nomzamo Mbatha and AKA know exactly what this feels like as they’re among the South African A-listers nominated in the Favourite South African Star category at the 2019 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. The entertainers are going up against sports stars Kagiso Rabada and Siya Kolisi.
After the announcement was made, Nomzamo, who stars as Thandeka on Isibaya, shared in a statement: “To be seen and voted for as one of the top five by the kids of South Africa, just melts my heart as it’s a validation from what I do.”

During a Twitterview with Mzansi Magic this week, the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador opened up about some of the most difficult scenes she’s had to shoot as Mpiyakhe’s daughter on Isibaya. She said: “His funeral as well as when he went missing and having to search for him. 2. When she was on a mission in the hills, tied up by Sunday and Sbu finding her. As he was trying to cut the rope to free her, Sdumo accidentally missed and stabbed my leg.”
Asked about how she feels about being nominated in the Best Actress in a TV Soap category at this year’s South African Film and TV Awards (SAFTAs), Nomzamo revealed: “In 2016 I was still growing and learning in the performance arts and I think with each season I have become stronger. Plus, being nominated feels like graduation day. We gave powerful performances for the past two years.”
The last couple of years have also been great for AKA. The rapper, who’s the fourth South African to be roasted on Comedy Central, is beyond excited for his nomination and has already started asking fans to vote for him.

Reacting to his nomination, Somizi said on Instagram: “I just wanna say thank you so much to Nickelodeon for nominating me in the Favourite South African Star at the 2019 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. I am super excited, it’s gonna be a tough one of course because I’m nominated amongst the best, but I trust my Somgaga nation that they will do their best by voting for me.”
We’re not surprised by these stars’ nominations. You would love them too if you saw them in action. If you haven’t already seen them doing what they love on screen, you can watch Nomzamo on Isibaya, and Somizi on Living the Dream with Somizi, both streaming on Showmax.
