Youngins Season 1 episodes 31-33 recap: Revelations

Episodes 31-33 centre on the students being struck by revelations around the time of the Inter House Athletics Day. Amo gives Khaya back his promise ring when he tries to make her feel guilty for confronting him about his lies, and Khaya bets Sefako R100 that he can win Buhle back in two weeks.

After Mahlatse assaults Tshepo for sexually harassing Palesa, Amo reminds him that his gentleness is part of what makes him a great guy, and she asks to be his girlfriend. Tumelo sacrifices everything, including his friends and his style, to be with Sefako until Alex invites him to the Pride Inter House Party. After Khaya catches Tumelo and Sefako together he reassures Sefako that being gay is okay, and that Khaya still loves his bro. But Tumelo breaks up with Sefako when he realises that the relationship is draining him of joy. And Khaya freezes up when he stumbles across one of Principal Mthembu’s secrets.

What happened in Youngins episodes 28-30?

Amo (Ayakha Ntunja) told Mahlatse (Thabiso Ramotshela) that she loves him as a friend, not a lover. Tumelo (Lebohang Lephatsoana) and Sefako (Tabile Tau) got back together but Sefako slapping Tumelo on his 16th birthday shifted something in the relationship and when Mahlatse found out about it, he punched Sefako right in the face. Buhle (Kealeboga Masango) went on the warpath to find Khaya’s (Toka Matabane) new love and make him jealous after he dumped Buhle out of the blue by text. Amo comforted Buhle while hiding her guilt over her secret romance with Khaya, but she cornered Khaya over his lies both when she found out he’s still attracted to Buhle, and when she figured out that Khaya was the one who told Principal Mthembu (Loyiso Macdonald) about their plans to record his meeting with his grooming target, Lerato (Dakalo Molope).

Khaya lies to Amo’s face again and tries to make her feel guilty for calling him out on snitching to the principal. And when Buhle confides in Amo that she kissed Khaya, Amo tells her that she deserves better than Khaya the liar. Khaya demands that Amo abandon her pride and apologise to him, but she points out that her dad used exactly the same tactics to break down her mother and gives Khaya back his worthless promise ring. Khaya retaliates by running after Buhle in front of Amo, and he bets Sefako R100 that he can win Buhle back in two weeks.

Sefako is more concerned with Mahlatse seeing him as a sissy, than he is about Mahlatse punching him because he’s an abuser. Tumelo and Mahlatse fight over Mahlatse hitting Sefako, and Sefako treating Tumelo with contempt, but Tumelo keeps sacrificing parts of himself to be with Sefako while Sefako sacrifices nothing.

Pearl (Keneilwe Matidze) assigns Tshepo (Tshepo Matlala) to take down the names of naughty students when she’s out of the class but when he starts sexually harassing Palesa (Amogelang Telekelo), Mahlatse confronts him and grabs him by the throat. Pearl kicks Mahlatse out of class when he can’t explain himself and when Amo can tell that Mahlatse is still not himself, she sneaks a book out of the library for him as a peace offering.

What happened in Youngins episode 32?

Buhle is determined not to go back to Khaya, but Khaya gets a bunch of students to hand Buhle roses (how much did those cost his mom?), and a shocked Amo watches him get down on one knee and give Buhle the same promise ring that he gave Amo, along with the same promises. Khaya acknowledges that he’s been a fool, but begs to be Buhle’s fool. And just like that, fool me twice, they’re back together (and Sefako owes Khaya R100).

Tumelo rocks up to meet Sefako dressed like a straight bro or (as Sefako points out) an undercover cop, only for Sefako to approve of the “rebrand”, claiming that it aligns with the vision that he has of them as a couple. The internalised homophobia is dialled up to 11!

Amo tells Mahlatse that he’s a great guy and a great person for being good and gentle, she apologises for not valuing his friendship as she should have, and asks him to ask her to be his girlfriend. And Mahlatse accepts, without fancy promises, rings or lies.

Everyone, including Mr Ramathuba (Simo Magwaza), is in a party mood for the Inter House Athletics Day … aside from Tumelo, who’s given up his friends, his style, his team and his joy. When Alex (Katlego Moloke) notices, they drag Tumelo off to the real event of the day – the Pride Inter House Party. There are decorations, a dance track, and even a school desk catwalk. Before long, Tumelo is voguing for his young life! Later Khaya comes back to the dorm unexpectedly and while Sefako claims to have been “tutoring” Tumelo, Khaya doesn’t see any textbooks. Sefako braces for trouble but Khaya tells him that people should be who they are, and love who they want.

And there is one more eye-opener to come. Principal Mthembu shows Khaya a new tablet-based app for maths and science, but when he has to step out of the office, Khaya is gobsmacked by what he sees when he picks up a call on the tablet.

After a day of revelations, Khaya is behaving oddly. But when Sefako sits Khaya down for a bro-to-bro chat about the awkwardness in the room with them, Khaya assures Sefako that being gay is not a condition. He’s not sick. Khaya tells Sefako, “This is who you are … you’re my friend and I love you. Just live your life.” Tumelo is wracked with fear, too, but can’t open up to Mahlatse. And when he talks to Alex, Alex is confused about why Tumelo, who’s been brave enough to be the gayest gay at home, is suddenly hiding his light at school.

Amo and Mahlatse become the school’s favourite new couple when they strut into the dining hall together arm in arm for the first time. The only hater is Khaya, who confronts Amo later to demand to know how she could do that to him. Amo immediately reads Khaya like a cheap leaflet and turns all his accusations back on himself. Meanwhile, Mahlatse drinks his Respect Women juice every morning and it only makes him stronger. He tells Amo that he’s happy she’s his first love because he wants a true partner and an equal. But when Pearl puts the class into groups to discuss sexually transmitted infections and diseases, Tumelo refuses to team up with Mahlatse, and Palesa tells Amo that her new man is boring. The only one getting a thrill is Tshepo, who tries to flash the class.

Khaya is desperate to talk to Amo again. And when Principal Mthembu tells Khaya that at the rate he’s improving, he could be in the top 10 academically (despite apparently not being able to do basic algebra in Matric), he seems nervous and distracted. Even Principal Mthembu telling him that he’s arranged a talent court to come to Khaya’s next match can’t quite drown out his conscience, or how he looks at Principal Mthembu with suspicion.

Sefako apologises to Tumelo for putting his needs and feelings above Tumelo’s ever since they started dating. He reveals that Khaya’s reaction has him rethinking being closeted. But it’s too little, too late for Tumelo, who’s realised that the relationship is draining him. Tumelo explains that Sefako being sorry for hitting him doesn’t change the fact that Sefako hit him in the first place. With all sincerity, Tumelo wishes that Sefako’s journey to coming out will be a kind one, but insists that he can’t take that journey as Sefako’s boyfriend.
