Sex and the City gave us some of the best quotes about love, relationships, and friendships, inspired us to make bold fashion statements and showcased the best parts of iconic cities.

Whether you were more of a Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha or Carrie, or at times a mix of all four, we can’t deny that the ‘city’ also played a starring role.

“New York City became that dazzling and dynamic playground – the ‘Big Apple’ of our eye, where ambitious young women could chase their own ‘Sex and the City’ dreams, meeting their Mr Big, landing a fashion PR job, or even sipping cosmopolitans in Manolo Blahniks,’ says Nicky Potgieter, Leisure Marketing Leader for Flight Centre.

Stream seasons 1-6 of Sex and the City on Showmax for a throwback that will make you want to organise a get-together with your squad. Why not turn it into a girls’ trip? Here are Flight Centre’s 9 top Sex and the City glamcation picks for 2018:

1. Abu Dhabi, UAE

While hardcore Sex and the City enthusiasts like to pretend that the two feature films, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010) never happened, we can’t deny that Abu Dhabi left an impression after the sequel. For a long time, Abu Dhabi was the conservative cousin of Dubai. While Dubai was glitz and glamour, Abu Dhabi was all business, but that’s not the case anymore. Just step into the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and you’ll be convinced. Don’t forget to witness the exquisite Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and shop ’til you drop at the Marina Mall. You won’t be disappointed.

2. Reunion Island, Indian Ocean

If you’d rather spend a glamorous holiday swimming, tanning, and exploring, you’ll find plenty of that on Reunion Island. Visa-free and just a four-hour flight from Johannesburg, this is the perfect place for a last minute girls’ getaway. The clear waters in the lagoon at L’Hermitage in Saint-Gilles-Les-Bains is the perfect place to kick-back with your floppy hat and oversized sunnies. The glitzy restaurants and bars that line the beach at Boucan Canot are a dream for sunset drinks before you head out for the night.

3. London, UK

Those who travel to London already know to visit its famous landmarks such as Big Ben, the Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, but if you’re keen to glam it up, opt for a live show in the West End, paired with a special wine-and-dine cruise along the Thames. Head for high tea at The Savoy Hotel, and take advantage of Mayfair’s high-end shopping and dining options this time around. Don your winter coat and saunter alongside those pretty pastel houses in Wingate Road and the “wisteria-hysteria” of Kensington and Notting Hill, channeling your inner Carrie Bradshaw.

4. Paris, France

With its monument-lined boulevards, museums, classical bistros and boutiques, Paris became a tight competitor to New York during the last season of Sex and the City. The final episode “An American Girl in Paris, Part Deux” may have closed the chapter on Miss Bradshaw’s Parisian adventure, but you can still have one of your own. Retrace some of her heeled steps with breakfast at the Plaza Athenee before crossing the street to do some serious shopping: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior and Gucci – what more could a girl want?

5. St Barts, Caribbean

Famous for its white, sandy beaches like Saline Beach and Colombier Beach, there’s a reason why St Barts (or Saint-Barthélemy) is a luxury travel favourite with many celebrities. We can only imagine Samantha Jones soaking up this tropical paradise. It’s a combination of sophistication and glamour with its Gustavia harbour mega yachts, chic boutiques, fine-dining restaurants with breathtaking views, and private spas. If you’re still up for the Caribbean, try an all-inclusive luxury cruise where you can enjoy those perfectly positioned tropical bays.

6. Shanghai, China

Known as China’s fashion capital, we’ve added this one to the list, especially with Shanghai Fashion Week, which happens twice a year. With its breathtaking skyline and glitzy nightlife, book a table at the intimate jazz bar called Heyday, which evokes the glamour days of the 1920s and ’30s, when jazz culture truly flourished. Take in the stately, early-20th century mansions along Wukang Road, and embrace its growing art industry at ART021, West Bund Art & Design and Photofairs Shanghai.

7. Côte d’Azur, France

If there’s one destination the ladies from Sex and the City forgot to visit, it was Côte d’Azur (The French Riviera). With exquisite towns such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice, and Monte Carlo, it’s a magnet for a roll-call of names from the stage and the big screen, as well as socialites and aristocrats who have been drawn here since the 19th Century. Lounge on a private beach, hit the blackjack tables, and dine and shop in style almost everywhere along this magnificent coast.

8. Sydney, Australia

From lounging out on the sands of the iconic Bondi Beach, to exploring the hip boutiques on Gould Street for a dose of stylish shopping, Australia is not all just kangaroos and billabongs, after all. Take in the spectacular views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Go vintage at the oldest remaining building, the 1816-founded Cadman’s Cottage, beside the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) a handy starting point for a romp around the area’s 19th-Century buildings, trendy cafes, shops and art galleries.

9. New York

As the basis of the series, New York can’t be left off the list. With direct flights from Johannesburg, you can get there in less than a day. Arrive ready to kick-start your very own Sex and the City adventure. Re-live your favourite on-screen moments on a Sex and the City official tour, in between soaking up the bright lights of Times Square and Broadway. Be sure to add the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim to your list, with afternoon tea with the girls at The Plaza. New York is the ultimate destination for a Sex and the City ‘glamcation’, but as you step out along the sidewalk in your trendiest ensemble, be sure to watch out for those puddles and busses!
