https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZzOobQBWjA&feature=youtu.be
Calling all Showmax subscribers living overseas – batten down the hatches and settle in for a month of movies, with these South African hit films coming to you in the month of August.
Sy Klink Soos Lente
This love story was a hit at local cinemas, and it’s now on Showmax. Ben is an underachiever – he’s a mechanic who turns down a promotion because he doesn’t really see himself as a “white-collar kind of guy”. But then he meets Linda, an auditor who happens to be the daughter of his boss, in a bar, and suddenly feels that the truth isn’t good enough. He lies to her, and tells her he’s the lead singer in a band – and when she wants to come watch him play, he has to make his lie a reality. Can he form a band, learn to sing and master the guitar in a few short weeks?
Modder & Bloed
Set against the backdrop of St Helena during the Anglo-Boer War in 1901, this is the story of how Afrikaans prisoners of war rose up against their oppressors and fought for the land that was theirs through the game of rugby. Based on the true story of Sommie Morkel, who went on to captain the first Springbok rugby side in 1906, this gritty period drama was released in SA cinemas last year to huge audience appeal.
Noem My Skollie
Selected as the South African entrant for Best Foreign Language Film for the 89th Academy Awards, this excellent film is about a gangster who has to save himself from the worst that prison life has to offer with his talent for storytelling, in front of an audience of his fellow prisoners. Winner of five SAFTAs (including for Best Actor for the lead, Dann Jacques Mouton) and seven nominations in the Africa Movie Academy Awards, this is a movie that will stick with you.
Trouvoete
Directed by Darrell Roodt, this Christmas/wedding-themed rom-com is as light and cheesy as a good soufflé, and Erica Wessels and Bouwer Bosch light up the screen as internet chat buddies who decide to meet in real life. But neither of them has had much luck with love in the past, and they’re both what you might call … different. Which might mean they’re perfect for each other.
Uitvlicht
Uitvlucht is a story of hope in a hopeless situation, grace in desperation, and abiding love. The director of this film is Regardt van den Bergh, known for projects like Faith like Potatoes and Klein Karoo. The film follows three story lines, but in the end all three carry the same message: that love can conquer anything.
