Like all the best deals in life, it’s a pretty simple arrangement. Here are the deets.

What’s Showmax?

Showmax is an internet TV service. Get all-you-can-eat access to a huge online catalogue of international and local TV shows, movies, kids’ shows and documentaries. Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services like Showmax are becoming more and more popular because there are no limits to how much you watch, when you watch or how often. There are also no ads, and you can start and stop your subscription whenever you like. We’re flexible that way.

Do I need an Explora to use it?

Showmax is available on internet-connected Exploras but you don’t have to use an Explora to access Showmax. Choose to stream or download shows on a smartphone or tablet by downloading the Showmax app, or access Showmax on the web browser of your computer or laptop, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Xbox.

What can I watch on Showmax?

Over 30 000 local and international series episodes, movies, kids’ series and documentaries, including the entire boxset of Friends, Seasons 1-9 of The Big Bang Theory and Emmy winners Big Little Lies, The Night Of and Veep, Seasons 1-6.

Showmax is also home to new shows that can’t be seen anywhere else, including The Young Pope, starring Jude Law and Diane Keaton; Taboo, starring Tom Hardy; Younger, which Glamour Magazine said “captured the Sex and the City vibe” like nothing else on TV; Kingdom, an MMA action drama starring Nick Jonas; and HBO’s hit family drama Succession. There’s also the racy period drama Harlots, described by Variety as “Think Downton Abbey meets Game of Thrones”.

The third season of Mr Robot premiered on Showmax, fresh from the US, and the ENTIRE boxset of all seasons of Game of Thrones is available for the most epic binge session imaginable.

And if local, homegrown content floats your boat, you’ve got a massive line-up to choose from, including express episodes of Mzansi Magic soaps Isithembiso and The Queen, express episodes of The River every weekday from 1Magic, and Afrikaans legal drama Fynskrif, with weekly episodes arriving express from their TV broadcast every Wednesday.

How do I sign up?

For Showmax subscribers, there’s just one easy step to get your Showmax subscription for free – simply link your Showmax account to your DStv account. For those who don’t yet have Showmax, just sign up using your email address and then select DStv account as your payment method. Here’s how:

I’m already a Showmax subscriber:

If you have a credit, cheque card or Paypal subscription, simply login to your Showmax account and change your payment method to “DStv add to account”. These are the steps:

  • Go to www.showmax.com and sign in.
  • Go to Manage Account and click on Manage Subscription.
  • Click Cancel Subscription then Reactivate Subscription.
  • Select “DStv add to account” as your payment method.
  • Sign in with your DStv login details (Connect ID) and accept the terms and conditions.
  • Add Showmax to your DStv account.
  • Get watching! Your entire family can start watching Showmax on up to 5 devices.

If your Showmax account is being billed through a third-party partner such as your cellphone network, you’ll need to contact them directly to cancel the payment, because, as efficient as Showmax customer service strives to be, one thing we do not have is access to other companies’ billing systems. Once the payment has been cancelled on their side, follow the steps above.

I’m not yet a Showmax subscriber:

There’s only one thing to do: sign up!

  • Go to www.showmax.com.
  • Sign up to Showmax with your email address.
  • Create a password.
  • Select “DStv add to account” as your payment method.
  • Enter your South African ID number.
  • Confirm your mobile phone number. A one-time pin (OTP) will be SMSed to this number to verify your account.
  • Enter the OTP and accept the T&Cs. Your entire family can start watching Showmax on up to 5 devices.
  • Get watching!

Does Showmax use data?

Yes. Any time you connect to the internet, you use data. But Showmax gives subscribers a number of ways to manage data consumption.

For streaming, use the Showmax bandwidth capping feature to automatically limit the amount of data being used.

Or try out the bandwidth calculator to help with budgeting for data spend. Plus, the Showmax app gives subscribers the option to download up to 25 series episodes or movies onto tablets and smartphones while they’ve got access to Wi-Fi. Watch these episodes offline later, without using any data.

It’s even possible to download files at a lower resolution, which will not only save data but also space on the device. Finally, there are a number of VAST Wi-Fi hotspots around the country that allow access to Showmax at zero cost – find out more here.
