Here’s what Showmax subscribers overseas can look forward to this week on Carte Blanche, which launches on Showmax within 48 hours of the broadcast in SA.
Recently furniture and office equipment were seized from the Gauteng Health Department to settle a medical negligence claim. This may seem like a particularly low point for the department, but it follows years of mismanagement and maladministration in the province. Meanwhile, more medical negligence claims are piling up for which the department cannot legally budget. Carte Blanche asks: is Gauteng Health facing an imminent financial crisis? Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg; Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
South African Aids activist David Patient died last week at the age of 56. Diagnosed as far back as 1983, Patient was an icon in the age of HIV stigma and an activist for LGBTQI rights. For 34 years he showed that it was possible to live “positively” with HIV. Carte Blanche reflects on his remarkable will to survive and victory over the idea that his diagnosis was a death sentence. (Producer: Kate Barry; Presenter: Derek Watts)
