Who wants to be a “good” mom when being bad is so much better?
Actress, writer and Odd Mom Out (2015-2017; Seasons 1-2 are available on Showmax) series creator Jill Kargman is kind of playing herself as Jill Weber in this comedy based on her 2007 semi-autobiography Momzillas. Let’s just say she knows her topic. It’s all about not fitting in with the rest of the outrageously rich New York moms in her neighbourhood. You know, those moms who take on parenthood as a cross between an Olympic sport and the qualifying finals for sainthood, while somehow wearing white pants (where are their toddlers supposed to wipe their hands and noses?!).
Jill wears black. “I’ve always felt like Wednesday Addams in Barbietown,” she admits. “Jill the character is more like me from 10 years ago, neurotic and caring what people think and trying to deal with the judgment of other mothers.” But Jill’s kooky, crazy mom moments will probably just make her children stronger, like being dirt lickers in a land of kids who can’t leave their plastic bubbles. Everyone knows that “bad” moms are bad-ass. Just check out four of our favourite worst moms, now on Showmax.
Nobody knows US Vice President (and later President) Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) better than her henpecked daughter Catherine (Sarah Sutherland). In Season 3, episode 3, while trying to get her mom out of a slump, Catherine rants that Selina’s pursuit of power has made her entire life “awful”. But what’s made this “hard, lonely, miserable life” worthwhile is that she actually shares her mom’s goal. There’s nothing that Catherine wants more than becoming the First Daughter. Shared goals! 2. Morticia Addams: The Addams Family and Addams Family Values (both movies are on Showmax)
She’s a glamorous, sadistic, bloodsucking, torturous horror, but there is no mother more understanding and supportive of her children’s hobbies than Morticia Addams (Angelica Houston). One glimpse of her daughter Wednesday’s (Christina Ricci) pale pout and she’s happy to watch Wednesday electrocute her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). And when Wednesday passes by holding a knife, Morticia asks if that’s for her brother, then tuts at it and gives Wednesday a much bigger, better knife. That’s love. Watch now »
3. Lynette Scavo: Desperate Housewives (Seasons 1-8 are on Showmax)
When career mom Lynette’s (Felicity Huffman) husband Tom (Doug Savant) and sons made a pigsty of the house in Season 2, episode 25, this cunning, unscrupulous mom brings in and lets loose a pet rat in the open plan kitchen to show them the error of their filthy ways. But we knew she was a true role model from the very first moment in Season 1,episode 1, when she makes her sons behave by revealing that she has Santa’s phone number and will call him to tell him that they want socks for Christmas if they don’t fall in line. Lynette might be the most relatable – and manipulative – mom on TV. Watch now »
4. Kris Jenner: Keeping Up with the Kardashians (Seasons 1-13 on Showmax)
This “momager” gets a lot of flack but we can’t help adoring the glee with which she makes her normally shameless kids cringe – like when they walk in on her doing a wet T-shirt photo session in Season 9, episode 8. Kris remarks that she wants to show her girls that they can still be sexy and confident in their 50s. And speaking of priorities, who can forget Season 3, episode 1, when Kris reprimanded Kim, telling her, “Kim, would you stop taking pictures of yourself, your sister’s going to jail.” Watch now »
