October isn’t just about Season 3 of Mr Robot and Season 7 of Game of Thrones coming to Showmax; there’s also a wealth of local and lekker content coming to “everyone’s anywhere TV”.
In this Showmax-Mzansi Magic co-production, SAFTA-winner Presley Chweneyagae (Tsotsi) and SAFTA-nominee S’dumo Mtshali (Isibaya) reprise their roles as cops Shoes and Chilli from Donovan Marsh’s award-winning film of the same name. In the gritty spinoff series, Chilli infiltrates an infamous crime family to bring down an untouchable patriarch, while criminals are trying to intimidate Shoes into withholding evidence. When these cases collide, the cops find themselves at a crossroads where their brotherhood bond will be tested. Binge only on Showmax from 05 October 2017.
Rapulana Seiphemo won Best Actor Awards at both Durban and FESPACO for his role as Lucky Kunene, infamous for hijacking buildings in Hillbrow. The crime thriller was South Africa’s official entry for the Oscars and won the Audience Award at Durban, among other accolades. Jerusalema will be available on Showmax from 05 October 2017.
South African Celia Boba was nominated for an Oscar for her work set-decorating this updated classic, about a disfigured musical genius (Gerard Butler) who plots to seduce a famous singer (Emmy Rossum in a Golden Globe-nominated performance) away from her attractive benefactor (Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson). The Phantom of the Opera will be available on Showmax from 09 October 2017.
Co-produced by Showmax and kykNET, Waterfront is a star-studded family noir set in the dark underbelly of one of South Africa’s most popular tourist attractions. Boat-building patriarch Ben Myburgh (SAFTA nominee Dawid Minnaar) is dead. This brings his three daughters – Julia (Die Byl’s Milan Murray), Anna (Silwerskerm and Fleur du Cap nominee Rolanda Marais) and Kate (Die Boekklub’s Trix Vivier) – back to the family business at the Cape Town harbour. But only one of them will inherit the family empire in this dark story of secrets, sibling rivalry and gentrification… Weekly episodes will be available on Showmax from 11 October 2017, express from kykNET.
The tenth anniversary season of kykNET’s hit matchmaking show is coming express to Showmax within 24 hours of airing on DStv. Join host Minki van der Westhuizen as she helps farmers find true love and revisits some of the couples and children who wouldn’t have existed if not for the show. Weekly episodes will be available on Showmax from 13 October 2017, express from the broadcast on kykNET.
